I’m shipping up to Boston for quick little vacation. Most importantly, what are the bars I should visit while I’m there? I’m also open to any suggestions about what to do in Boston.

Right now it’s pretty cold and snowy here. Check out The Burren in Somerville for some classic local entertainment. They are small and have some good bands rock through the place. http://www.burren.com/

“Boston” downtown is mostly touristy stuff. The Cheers bar is the tourist one, not the one the show was actually based on. ‘Fire and Ice’ is kind of a unique place to have a nice dinner. Somerville is where it’s at for food.

Redbones in Davis Square (Somerville again) is really good.

“Oriental de Cuba” in Jamaica Plain has some absolutely amazing food if you can decipher the menu.

If you want seafood, take a ride up to Gloucester.

The Aquarium and the Museum of Science are always fantastic places to go to. Head for Durgin Park if you want a good, traditional meal. Be warned, however, the dining experience may be a bit atypical*. The Faneuil Hall marketplace surrounding the restaurant is a great place to spend the day and do touristy things. If it were summer I’d recommend a duck tour.

*The restaurant was established in the early 1800s in an old warehouse. Some of the values from those times are still present. Guests are seated at long communal tables & the wait staff are encouraged to be sassy and talk back to diners. It’s a pretty fun place to eat.

Gloucester, Salem, Beverly... any of those places will have a good downtown with seafood and drinks or you could grab a good North Shore roast beef (just don’t go to Kelly’s Roast Beef)

It’s hard to go wrong with the smaller, local places. If you do want ‘fresh off the boat’ and a nice place to eat go to the ‘Gloucester House’ restaurant. They are a little pricey, but nice and as fresh as you can get. If you want something more ‘local’ try Woodmans in Essex. Their main restaurant is open year round and everything is fresh off the boat. Famous for fried clams, but it’s all pretty good. I used to have lunch at a nice little dive called ‘Lobsta Land’ that is also really good and really fresh.

Good irish pubs, Mr Doyle’s, Squealing Pig, The Burran. For time killers, the museum of fine arts, Freedom trail (outdoors so depends on determination). lots of bars on Bolyston street and in davis square in cambridge. The old houses near beacon hill are neat. it it has been snowy i suggest boots as (like all cities) the snow piles can block drains and be a slushy mess.

How can I forget - While you are there stroll over to the North End for some incredible Italian eateries and skip dessert at the restaurant - go to Mike’s Pastry. https://www.mikespastry.com/
